Nov 24

Well, I got back from deer hunting for the first time in my life. I probably should have started hunting much earlier, I mean my own sister has been since she was like 12 and my Dad always has. Anyway's I sat out in the woods Saturday and Sunday and had a good time with my Dad.

It was really cold Saturday morning, and it probably didn't help that we woke up at 4:30 am. I didn't see any deer in the morning. Then in the afternoon I saw a 4-6 point buck and I took a shot at him. I hit him in the upper shoulder (because I was trying to pass the bullet through his shoulder and into the heart and lungs area). The bullet apparently ricocheted off the deer's shoulder and he took off running. My Dad and I tracked him for probably an hour or hour and a half through the woods but got stuck and couldn't track him anymore.

It was really exciting to see a deer walking around without knowing I was watching. I had probably 30 seconds of time before I shot and it was really nerve racking. Then on Sunday I saw two does at two separate times but didn't have a good shot on them. So I didn't bring a deer home but I had a good time.

In other random news, I've been listening to Bob Marley non-stop lately. It all started one night because I was sort of feeling like I was Will Smith from the movie I Am Legend (you know where he's more or less the last man on earth...alone) and I got that Bob Marley song from that movie stuck in my head - Three Little Birds. Then I was about to download that song when I realized I had the greatest hit CD all along (who'd a thunk?). Since then it's been the only music I've been listening to.

I was always under the impression that reggae music was the inspiration for the ska music genre (which I am a huge fan of) but after a little research I discovered that ska came first and reggae actually was an off shoot of ska. Then later in the 80's ska and punk become joined at the hip which is a strange marriage if you ask me.

In house news, I had an open house this weekend and I guess some people were also shown my house as well. I'm sure all the noisy neighbors went through my house to try to figure out what's going on. It seems like the worst possible time to have to sell a house, but there's not a great deal I do about that. Hopefully I can keep my head above water long enough to sell it for a reasonable price. Things definitely aren't like they used to be where Emily and I spent money like no tomorrow. Now I have to carefully evaluate every purchase I make.

Tonight I sacrificed a bunch of food I needed to buy so I could buy a snow shovel. It's funny how little snow shovels are appreciated until you need them. This morning all I had was a small 3 foot handle, skinny shovel to shovel out my driveway. It took me a good 20 minutes to do a really bad job but I got my car out. I can only imagine what this morning would have been like had blondie still lived here. Chaos!

    Did you update your house pictures yet online? It would be worth setting aside time to do that soon. I'd use the old ones if I were doing it because it was sunny and summer and very clean looking.

    It was nice seeing you for Thanksgiving. When I talked to Barb last night she said she was glad that you stayed for awhile afterward. Hope your drive to work goes well today...be careful!

Tech: How To Fix HTML Table Caption 1px Shift Bug

One of my favorite, but underused HTML elements is the CAPTION element. The CAPTION element should be be a description of the table while a TH should be a heading for a column. I think too often people use the TH element on HTML forms that really contain no tabular data and shouldn't be in a table regardless (yes I'm a hypocrite). The CAPTION element would be better suited to describe an HTML form than a TH tag.

After using the CAPTION element for awhile now, I've noticed that in some browsers, it appears to be a pixel shorter in width than in other browsers. Below, take a look at the top left of the table. You'll see that there appears to be a 1px discrepancy. This happens in all versions of Firefox and in Internet Explorer. The bug doesn't affect Opera, Safari, or Google Chrome.

1px Shift In HTML Caption

The Solution

The following code will fix the bug in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

caption { margin-left: -1px; }

A Better Solution To The 1px Caption Shift Bug

I would recommend doing the opposite of the selector above and leave the CAPTION margin at 0px but target Firefox and Internet Explorer using CSS hacks. I suspect that Firefox and Internet Explorer are actually in the wrong here and that the others are in the right.

/* Target Firefox */ @-moz-document url-prefix() { caption { margin-left: -1px; } } /* Target IE (or use IF IE statement ) */ caption { _margin-left: -1px; }

I logged online using Internet Explorer the other day and got the new Yahoo home page. I'm sure this is an attempt to distance them from AOL whole stole their design a bit ago.

SPORE SPORE is the latest game from the creators of The Sims and Sim City. Having played both of those games and enjoying them, I thought I'd take a chance and buy this game as well.

The premise of the game is to evolve from a cellular organism to a full blown species capable of space travel. The game starts out by allowing you to customize the look of your cell. After that you basically run around eating other cells and then you earn the ability to to upgrade your cell, either with weapons or friendly features. I of course chose weapons every time to start my conquest of conquering everything in the game.

After awhile of that, which is probably the only boring part of the game, you move on to walking on land. There is a great deal of customization in this part of what your species looks like. With this stage you can start attacking other species and also add members to your gang of warriors.

After this the game zooms out more and allows you to control multiple members of your tribe at once. This part of the game is similar to real time strategy games. I found this part to be quite a bit of fun but not to hard to manage like some other games are.

After that you move to outer space. If anybody has watched Star Trek this part of the game is a lot like the original series. You travel from star system to star system contacting alien life forms and either helping them or conquering them.

I slowed down a bit at this stage and got a bit friendlier trying not to aggravate too many other life forms.

The game has got a rash of bad reviews on computer nerd sites due to its' anti-piracy DRM that is included with it. While DRM is evil and all, the game is really great and I would probably only care about the DRM if I owned the game but didn't buy it.

The only complaints I have about the game is there is no way to reverse evolve or return to stages earlier in life (other than starting a new saved game) Sometimes I'd like to go back and be a tribe again. I give SPORE a 9/10 View Comments (0)

Blink 182 - Touchdown Boy - Performed by Neal

This is a pretty tough song to play, I did screw up a few times but this the best take I had out of a good 15 tries. Neal Grosskopf (0)
